I feel like it's a more personable approach and more worth the effort if you get up close and personal while killing them silently.
Thanks to the info on Far Cry 2 modding provided by the OpenWorldGames forums (now apparently defunct), I've been able to modify the game's rigid weapon slot system with a recipe of my own liking. Now the weapons are assigned as follows:
Primary Weapon Slot (Key 3): All automatic rifles + mp5 smig, all shotguns and the two machineguns
Secondary Weapon Slot (Key 2): All pistols, the uzi & mac10 smigs, and all pyro/explosive weapons (nade launchers, rocket launchers, flamethrower)
Special Weapon Slot (key 4): the three sniper rifles + the dart rifle
This configuration is more optimal than the one the game comes with, because you can always have a long distance weapon (sniper/dart rifle), no matter what other weapons you need.

Instructions:
- Update your Far Cry 3 game to version v1.03 (game patcher is found online for free)
- Backup the files PATCH.DAT and PATCH.FAT from the Data_Win32 folder
- Unpack the contents of the download inside the Data_Win32 folder, overwriting the original files.
That's it. If you want to revert to the original settings, just copy over the original files that you've backed up.
