Hibiscus ‘Black Dragon’ (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis hybrid)
‘Black Dragon’s outstanding blooms are sure to impress you! The 8” deep burgundy flowers have unusual, eye-catching black centers. The American Hibiscus Society named it the 2005Hibiscus of the Year. The bush is a slow grower and once it reaches 18” it starts to grow laterally. However, the spectacularblooms more than offset its growth habit. Grow in full sun with lots of water and fertilizer.

Tips for Success:

• Sun, sun and more sun.

• They are warm-growing plants and suffer if subjected to
cool temperatures over extended periods. As a rule, keep
temperatures above 65°F, especially in the winter.

• Water on visual soil dryness or plant wilt. Severe wilt can hurt
them. Careful watering is critical during the winter or anytime
when the light level is low and temperatures are cool.

• Under high light and warm temperatures they are
heavy feeders
and need a balanced fertilizer applied
on a regular basis. A fertilizer like Dyna Gro “Grow” 7-9-5 will
help induce blooms.
• Flowering varies widely between varieties. Full sun, warm
temperatures, a balanced fertilizer and careful attention to
watering will produce the best results for your hibiscus.

Let it die song.

Selecting the Best Pot or Container for your Plant

  1. Beautiful color Review by Bridget

This is the most beautiful hibiscus flower I have ever seen. Since this is my first hibiscus plant, I followed the directions included with the plant after receiving it in the mail. Three months later, I had one big bloom which was pink instead of dark maroon. I contacted Logee’s and I was told that the plant will only produce the dark maroon color in perfect lighting conditions. I moved the plant indoors by a north facing window because it was getting stressed out in the dry Arizona weather. The next bloom was the perfectly beautiful, very dark maroon, HUGE, and mesmerizing. I am currently using stakes to keep it straight because it grows sideways. It flowers every month, and the bloom lasts a couple of days. After a year, the plant has grown 3 branches and each branch has many buds & blooms. I love it! (Posted on 5/17/2019)

  2. Stunning Flowers Review by AH
How do you rate this product?

Beautiful flowers, huge blooms, one lasted two days. The plant itself is a little ornery, likes to grow sideways but some stakes fixed that. I bought two hibiscus from Logee's they both are beautiful. Bought them in the spring started flowering mid-summer. In mid September (central Texas) they both started sending out lots of blooms. Just wish I had more room for more! Wish we could post photos. (Posted on 10/6/2018)

  3. Hibiscus ‘Black Dragon’ Review by Ricky
How do you rate this product?

I ordered 2 Black Dragon plants and received them 2 days after they were shipped. They were in excellent shape with not one leaf damaged. We had a Black Dragon that froze last year and it it truly a large gorgeous flower. Very satisfied with the plants I received from Logee's and would order again. (Posted on 4/30/2018)

  4. Amazing flower!! Review by Michael
How do you rate this product?

I bought several hibiscus and with Black Dragon I second guessed my decision because it was the darkest of all my selection. It ended up being my favorite so far!!
To start off, the plant was very healthy, and with my first successful bloom, the flower was HUGE, so far bigger than my other 15 exotic hibiscus plants. Last but not least the color is spectacular, actually like a bright fluorescent maroon, a little hard to describe but the color but it's more beautiful than the picture here, I would be happy to submit one :) (Posted on 7/29/2016)

  5. This hibiscus is a winner! Review by Dwayne
How do you rate this product?

Black Dragon demands your attention when it's growing in your garden. The vibrant coloring of this hibiscus is truly remarkable. As the sun begins to set the blooms look even more dramatic and richer. Just watch everyone's reaction as they eye this beauty. Black Dragon is also very special as well, due to the fact that you don't find everyone selling this plant. A great purchase! (Posted on 10/15/2014)

Do you want a hibiscus that is a Technicolor dream? It’s Cajun hibiscus today on Southern Gardening.

Cajun

Cajun hibiscus were bred and released by the Dupont Nursery in Louisiana. There are at least 38 fantastic selections featuring colors ranging from bright yellows, pink, red, and whites. Some of the more spectacular are blends and those with bright red eyes. The size of the flowers can be unbelievable, with some blooms having a diameter that can exceed nine inches. The foliage is dark green and glossy and provides a nice background to display the colorful blooms. If there was a drawback to this plant it would be that the flowers generally only bloom for a single day. But there is an upside. These plants will produce flowers almost continually from spring to frosts in the fall. In most gardens in Mississippi Cajun hibiscus will need winter protection. This is an easy task if grown in containers that can be moved ahead of freezing temperatures. To have the best looking hibiscus be sure the plants do not go through periods of drought. These plants need to have consistent and even watering to maintain the gorgeous flowers. Cajun hibiscus need a readily available supply of nutrients and most gardeners will find it easier to use water soluble fertilizers and feed during normal watering.

Cajun hibiscus are perfect for adding a tropical flair on a porch or patio. Combine with other tropicals such as bananas and/or canna which require similar care and management. I’m horticulturist Gary Bachman and I hope you’ll join me next time for Southern Gardening.
